All-Terrain E-Class reportedly in the works, tipped for 2017 launch
The jacked-up AWD station wagon segment is seeing a modest resurgence of sorts in all weight classes, with the debut of longroofs like the Volvo V60 Cross Country and the VW Golf Alltrack. And according to Australia's Motoring, Stuttgart is looking to get into the game with the next Mercedes-Benz E-Class station wagon, which will reportedly receive the imaginative All-Terrain moniker.
The next-gen E-Class station wagon will follow the Detroit auto show debut of the E-Class sedan, bowing in September of this year. The E-Class All Terrain variant is expected be positioned between the regular E-Class and the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class in size, if not in price -- the "normal" version of the E-Class station wagon, meawhile, is expected to break cover in June after Mercedes introduces the sedan in a few more regional markets.
Rumors of an Audi Allroad-style E-Class stretch back to June of 2015, though Mercedes has hinted at various points in the last decade that there was room for growth within the E-Class lineup besides the obligatory long-wheelbase version for China, available since the W212-generation sedan that entered production in 2009.
While Mercedes-Benz works on the wagon there's yet another E-Class offshoot far closer to launch, perhaps as early as this spring. A Maybach version of the E-Class is in the final stages of testing and will feature a redesigned C-pillar section with new quarter windows, longer rear doors and, of course, a much more cossetting rear seating area. This model could debut as early as this spring at the Beijing motor show, and do a real number on BINZ's business model.
